Bloomsburg Drops Doubleheader to Mansfield

BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Mansfield University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday. The Huskies fell 6-0 in game one and 11-8 in game two.

In game two, the Huskies (12-21, 5-7 PSAC East) jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage in the top of the first. Preston Hitchcock (Laceyville/ Wyalusing Valley) and Matt Allen (DuBoistown/ South Williamsport) led the game off with a pair of singles and Vinnie James (Bristol/ Bristol) walked to load the bases with nobody out. After a Kevin Ward sacrifice-fly, Andy Bucher doubled home two runs to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead. Paul Eckley (Port Matilda/ State College) then followed with an RBI single, driving in Bucher from second.

However, the lead would be short lived as Mansfield cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first and then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second and added another run in the third to take a 10-4 lead. In the top of the fifth, Ward hit his first home run of the year to cut the lead to 10-5 but the Mounties added a run in the bottom half to make it an 11-5 game. In the final inning, the Huskies rallied for three runs and brought the tying run to the plate but Mansfield pitcher Tyler Noel got Matt Robinson (York/ Red Lion) to ground out to second to end the game. Eckley picked up an RBI in the inning on a sacrifice fly, while the other two runs scored on errors.

James was 2-3 with two runs scored and Allen was 2-4 with two runs, while Kevin Ward was 1-2, with two runs and two RBI's.

In game one, Bloomsburg could manage little offense against Mansfield pitcher Eric Rosenberger, who scattered six hits and struck out two in a complete game shutout. Kevin Ward led the Huskies with two hits in game one. Andy Bucher (Littlestown/ Littlestown)got a hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to a season high six games.

The Huskies will host Lock Haven on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
